Pokemon is a media franchise published and owned by Japanese video game company Nintendo and created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996. Originally released as a pair of interlinkable Game Boy role-playing video games developed by Game Freak, Pokemon has since become the second-most successful and lucrative video game-based media franchise in the world, behind only Nintendo's own Mario franchise

- Red The main protagonist of Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow and male protagonist of Pokemon FireRed and Leaf Green. This character also appears in Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal, and their remakes, as the final battle. He also returns in Black 2 and White 2 as a participant in the Pokémon World Tournament. This protagonist has many versions in canon, the most notable being Ash Ketchum in the anime.
- Ethan:The main protagonist of Pokémon Gold and Silver and male protagonist of Pokémon Crystal, Heart Gold, and SoulSilver. In the games, Ethan is a young trainer from the Johto region, who sets out to prove himself three years after Red became the League Champion. Ethan's journey as a Pokémon trainer begins when Professor Elm asks him to run an errand for Mr. Pokémon, who lives north of Cherrygrove City. This protagonist is the inspiration for Jimmy, one of the heroes of "The Legend of Thunder", the multipart episode at the beginning of Pokémon Chronicles (an hour-and-a-half long episode in the original Japanese version).

- Lyra: The female protagonist of Heart Gold and SoulSilver.
